A week after he was held by kidnappers, the Paramount Ruler of Mbo local government area of Akwa Ibom State, Ogwong Okon Abang has been freed by his abductors.

Family sources confirmed that the traditional ruler was freed on Sunday, May 26, 2024, after the payment of N50 million ransom, adding that “he was immediately taken to a specialist hospital for urgent medical attention.”

Owong Abang was abducted by gunmen who stormed his palace on Sunday at the riverside community of Ebughu, and whisked him away into a waiting speedboat that disappeared immediately through the Ibaka beach into the high sea.

The state’s Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Timfon John, could not be reached for reaction as she could not answer calls to her phone.
