Popular celebrity stylist Toyin Lawani has reacted to the negative reactions she received about her outfit to the just-concluded AMVCA 2024.
The fashion connoisseur took to her Instagram page to reveal that the initial outfit she intended to wear for the event ‘broke’, so she had to quickly design another outfit made with sack within a few hours.
She shared a video of the outfit and wrote,
“Devil tried,
But he couldn’t stop me,Created this masterpiece without few hours today,
Main dress of over a month got broken,
But the King of Fashion 👑 in like a PHOENIX,
Always rising from the ashes and rising strongerSo we decided let’s serve MY SACK DRESS instead 🥰
What’s your take on this creative masterpiece”

However, the video was met with mixed reactions, with many criticizing the outfit and making Toyin a laughing stock for wearing sack.
Some asserted that the dress was ugly, trashy, and tacky, and that Toyin should have done better since she is a fashion designer.
Well, Toyin addressed the critiques in a follow-up post, stating that Nigerians are backward when it comes to fashion and she would not conform to their standards.
She emphasized that she designs for the global stage, not Nigeria alone, so she is unperturbed by the backlash.
Toyin wrote,

AT THE BACK WHEN IT COMES TO FASHION ART ,
THEY REFUSED TO BE LIBERATED AND I REFUSE TO TO CONFORM TO THE SOCIETAL NORMS ,
YALL NEED TO UNDERSTAND I DIDNT LEARN FROM NIGERIA,
MY MOM GROOMED ME ,
BUT I WENT ABROAD TO GET MORE KNOWLEDGE ,
DONT EXPECT ME TO DO THINGS YOUR WAY ,
I DONT DESIGN FOR THE SOCIETY ,
I DESIGN FOR THE WORLD.
